Houston has an extensive network of freeways stretching 575 miles in its 10 county metro area, with Interstate 6-10 forming a 10 mile diameter loop around downtown. George Bush Intercontinental Airport is ninth busiest in the nation and 19th busiest worldwide. William P Hobby Airport is Houston’s second largest commercial port and operates small to medium flights, its third largest, Ellington Field, is a former US Air Force Base and is mainly used for government and private crafts. Houston’s Metro provides transportation in the form of busses, trolleys, lift vans, and as of January 1st 2004, light rail service (METRORail) which runs on only 8 miles of track. Prior to METRORail, Houston was the largest city in the Unites States without a rail transit system.
